The recipe in 15 seconds

Method

  1. Cut each slice of bread into 3 sticks. Whisk the eggs, milk, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and salt in a shallow dish.

  2. Dip each stick quickly into the custard, turning to coat all sides, and let the extra drip off. Do not soak, or they turn soggy.

  3. Brush the basket with a little melted butter. Lay in half the sticks in a single layer with space between them and brush the tops with butter.

  4. Air fry at 380°F for 6 to 8 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden brown and crisp on the outside.

  5. Repeat with the rest of the sticks, then serve warm with maple syrup for dipping.

Tips

  • Air fryers vary: oven-style models and smaller baskets may need 2 to 3 minutes more. Check early the first time.
  • Day-old bread holds its shape best. Challah works well in place of brioche.
  • Freeze cooked sticks in a single layer, then bag them. Reheat from frozen at 370°F for 4 to 5 minutes.
