Method

  1. Make these once your campfire has burned down to glowing coals (after cooking dinner over it is ideal; a fresh fire takes 30 to 45 minutes to get there). Set a grate over the coals. You want medium heat: you can hold your hand just above the grate for 5 to 6 seconds.

  2. Fill each cone in layers of chocolate chips, marshmallows and strawberries, finishing with marshmallows and a few chips on top. Pack them in gently so they don't fall out.

  3. Wrap each cone completely in a square of foil, scrunching it closed over the top.

  4. Lay the cones on their sides on the grate over the coals, away from any flames. Cook, turning a quarter turn every minute with tongs, until the chocolate melts.

  5. Lift one off, open the top of the foil and peek: the chocolate should be melted and the marshmallows soft. If not, rewrap for another minute. Let cool for a minute, then peel back the foil and eat.

Tips

  • Keep the cones away from flames and turn them often; waffle cones scorch quickly.
  • Set up a filling bar and let kids build their own cones, then write names on the foil with a marker.
  • Most marshmallows contain gelatin, so look for gelatin-free ones for vegetarians.
