Method
Heat a chargrill pan or barbecue grill plate over high heat until smoking. While it heats, slice the tomato and onion, shred the lettuce and split the buns.
Mix the mince with the paprika and divide in two. Press each into a thin patty about 13 cm wide (a little wider than the bun, as it shrinks), press a dimple into the middle and season well on both sides.
Toast the buns cut side down on the grill until marked and golden, then set aside.
Brush the patties with the oil and grill without moving until well charred underneath.
Flip and grill until charred on the second side and cooked through, with no pink in the middle.
Build each burger: bottom bun, patty, pickles, tomato sauce, onion, tomato, lettuce, then the top bun spread with mayonnaise.
Tips
- Outside Australia this is sold as the Burger King Whopper. Hungry Jack's is the Australian name for the same chain.
- The smoky char is what makes it taste like the original, so get the grill really hot. A few drops of liquid smoke in the mince gets you even closer.
- Make it a Whopper with cheese by laying a slice of cheddar on each patty for the last minute.
