Method

  1. Put the meatballs in a large microwave-safe bowl, cover and microwave on high until thawed and warm, stirring halfway.

  2. While they heat, chop the garlic and slice the scallions. Mix the cornstarch with the water in a cup until smooth.

  3. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat and cook the garlic, stirring, until fragrant and just turning pale gold.

  4. Add the honey, soy sauce, ketchup, vinegar and red pepper flakes and bring to a simmer. Stir the cornstarch mixture again, pour it in and stir until the sauce turns thick and glossy.

  5. Add the meatballs and simmer, turning them often, until coated in glaze and steaming hot all the way through (165°F in the center).

  6. Pile into a dish, scatter with the scallions and sesame seeds and serve with toothpicks.

Tips

  • Cut one meatball in half to check: it should be hot right to the middle, not just warm.
  • Keep them warm for a party in a small slow cooker on the warm setting, with a splash of water stirred in if the glaze gets too thick.
  • For gluten-free, use tamari instead of soy sauce and choose meatballs labeled gluten-free, since most contain breadcrumbs.
