Method

  1. Melt the butter in a large microwave-safe mug, about 20 to 30 seconds.

  2. Add the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder and salt to the mug and mix with a fork. Add the milk and vanilla and stir until smooth, scraping the bottom edges.

  3. Push the chocolate squares into the middle of the batter so they're just covered.

  4. Microwave on high for 60 to 70 seconds, until risen and just set on top but still soft in the middle. Microwaves vary, so start with 60.

  5. Let it stand for 1 minute (the mug will be hot), then top with ice cream and eat straight away.

Tips

  • Use a mug that holds at least 350 ml so it doesn't overflow.
  • Overcooking is the only way to ruin it: it should look slightly underdone when it comes out.
